The Underground Tomato

LOG 3 ( pics included )

September 7th, 2008

It seems as if i havent visited or updated this site in a while, but i assure you that i HAVE been trying....

I have been having the worst loading problems with my computer lately... and i get so frustrated with things not appearing or updating that i just put it aside.. however, i think that i have got everything taken care of now..

Now.........For the updates.

First, on the topic of my Lamasi dart frogs, i have had the lot of them for about 2 or so months now and they LOVE their viv.. they ( 2.2.0 ) are out exploring every inch of it every single day..

A few weeks ago though, i had noticed that 2 of them had gone missing.. and i couldnt pin point  which of them were gone since they look so darn similar..

Anyhow, a few days ago i was spraying down the tank, as usual, when i noticed a group of 3 of them hanging out on a piece of cork bark down on the lower right side of their viv... normally, they hang out in the background fig when ever i open the lid... so this struck me as odd..

I noticed that when i nealt down for a closer look all three darted behind the cork bark..  the tank hasone side ( right ) pushed up against a wall, so there is never anthing that disturbs that side of the tank.... i pulled out the tank and lifted up the aquarium background to find 4 clutches of eggs scattered about on the viv glass!?!?!  3 of the clutches are good ( one bing a double clutch ) and only one is obviously bad..

So, this leaves me wondering if there are any tads already deposited in some of the broms and water collecting areas of the tank?..................dunno..............

here are some pictures for you!!

this is the right side of the viv up against the wall where they were hanging out at... behind the cork bark there is just exposed glass with a background tapped to the outside..

sorry for the poor picture.. but you can just make out the four clutches.. two near the top right, one in the center and the last ( double clutch ) to the bottom left..

this is one of the females that was on  one of the brom leaves near the clutches....

Its amazing to think that i have only had these guys for a few weeks/months and they are already procuding tads.....SO COOL!!

I did forget to mention that i pulled my first tad from them about a month ago... "it" is just now starting to get its back legs..

Pic:

i REALLY hope that this turns out to be a functional froglet...

Next.. i cant remember if i said anything about me going to a reptile expo in Wilsonville, OR.  or not.... i know that i have on several different forums..

Anyhow, i picked up one possible male lamasi, and three leucomela froglets.. these guys are AWESOME!!

Pics:

i also received 10 mossy frog tadpoles about a month and a half ago.. they are doing well.. some of them are starting to get some pretty good sized back legs on them now..

this is their holding tank.. i placed about a handful of duckweed in there 3 weeks ago, and now i have to scoop out handfuls almost every week just so light can reach the bottom of the container.. lol

they are nothing special to look at right now.. just black tadpoles.. so i will update with pictures of them once they color up a bit..

I also caught one of my baby pygmy chameleons in his first shed a few days ago:

I rarely ever get to see this with the baby chameleons... so i could not pass this op for a picture.. lol

Last friday,  i started another vivarium project.. a 10 gallon tank that is now holding a "pair" of lamasi...

here are some pictures of the progress and the for now final look , although the glare makes it hard to see what is going on...

to the right is a small drip wall that cascades down a piece of cork bark.. i attached some java moss to the front in hopes that it will creep up and over onto the background.....

i will try to get a better, no glare photo sometime soon.. i hope....lol

i think thats it for now..

I will update this with more pictures as time ( and my computer ) allows...

Spetember 28th, 2008

my computer seems to be fine this evening, so it thought that i might post a few new things..

First, the 4 baby pygmy chameleons that i have left ( the others were sold/given to fellow hobbyists ) are doing great, thriving in their temp setup.

here is an odd shot of a "bicolored baby"...... it was just the lighting that made it look this way..lol

secondly, my Lamasi dart frogs are doing wonderfully. there have been numerous clutches layed to date, resulting in roughly 8-9 tadpoles in various stages at this time.. the first tadpole that i found is just about ready to pop its front legs....

here is a pic of "it":

he is still pretty dark .. not much color on him at the moment, hopefully that will change before he morphs out??

i also updated the Lamasi parents vivarium with some plant cuttings that i received a few weeks ago.

here is a Peperomia Sp. ( unknown ) cutting .. this is one of many in this tank and a few other tanks

Peperomia Prostrata cutting.. one of many.....

oak leaf creeping ivy .... one of very many cuttings.........

and then there is this mysterous leaf.... i got this a month or so ago as a gift from someone i bought springtails from.... not quite sure what it is, though it is very pretty  and adds to my vivariums' look quite a bit..

i also did some redecorating in a few of my Reed Frog tanks this past weekend.

i will take some pics after it has filled in a bit..

And on that note, here are some updated shots of a few of the baby Hyperolius Puncticulatus from the first clutch this season: ( they have REALLY colored up nicely, seems like there are mostly males so far.......)

My mosy tadpoles are also doing very well... all of them have their back legs and are working on their front ones.. they are also starting to acquire a deep forest green color on top of their heads and at the base of their legs.. not  too much longer and i should have some awesome pictures of those guys up on here!

so, no updates for October... everything has been growing up and filling in, in many of my tanks..

My hold backs of my H. Puncticulatus are doing very well.. calling daily at this point.

My green leg lamasi are doing exceptionally well also. they are producing many many tadpoles.. although, the first one that i tried to raise on my own ended up with a mild form os SLS ( spindly leg sydrome ).. and was humanely euthanized.

here is a shot of the Lamasi tank as of today 11/8/08

everything has been growing like weeds and it has finally started to fill in nicely.. there is also a large amount of Microfauna present in the vivarium which has been supplementing  the frogs diet along with their daily ration of fruit flies and springtails.

I also discovered yet ANOTHER clutch of H. Puncticulatus eggs a few weeks ago. the tadpoles are doing well. there are roughly 50+ tadpoles at this stage.

here is a pic of the mass on day one:

the parents:

I also discovered what i think is the last two baby pygmy chameleons of the season in a viv last week.. they are growing and adjusting well to their new smaller tank:

two males, presumably.

dad and a baby.. note the huge size difference... this is why the babies can sometimes be mistaken as a "snack"....

my mossy froglets all eft the water with the exception of one who didnt make it for unknown reasons.. i was planning on holding on to some of these, but an offer came up and i decided to let them go with a more experienced keeper:

Saturday November 22nd, 2008

All of my mossy froglet morphed and i sold the majority to fellow froggers here in Idaho and i have kept three hold backs for myself.

I am sure that they will turn out to be male, but it would be nice to see if one turns out to be a female.

Also, a BIG thank you to Diana B from Boise, Idaho. she is a new lucky owner of (4) of my Baby H. Puncticulatus from the first spawning of this year.

And on that note, the new tadpoles are doing well. I am raising them slightly different as i have other clutches before and i will document their progress shortly.

here is another shot of my Lamasi viv that is growing like mad!

All but two of the film canisters now have a tadpole in them.. One of the tadpoles is getting VERY close to the morph mark. i am hoping that this one does not develop SLS and is a normal, healthy froglet.

i also got a few shots of a Pair of my pygmys at their "watering hole" tonight.

this is the only pygmy tank that has a small shallow dish as these are the only two pygmys that I know will actually use it.

I managed to get a picture right after he stopped drinking. i walked into the room as he was starting to walk out of the dish.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! i know that it is almost 2-3 weeks late, but life has had me VERY busy these past few weeks, and ihave had little time to do anything else really.

UPDATES!

As you may have noticed on the front page, i will no longer be working with the African Reed Frogs species of Africa. I have donated some to the Boise Zoo today, and i will be placed on their List Serve, which will send out feelers to other zoos that wish to purchase more amphibians.

sadly, my schedule does not leave any time to take care of such prolific frogs at this time.. maye in the future..

As i mentioned, i visited the Boise Zoo today. i took come good pictures and got a back stage tour of the zoo as well.

here are some pictures and info on that:

i went to the Boise Zoo today. I went to donate another lot of Hyperolius Puncticulatus ( reed frogs ) to them..

it was SO COLD.. so there werent that many animals out, but i managed to get a few good shots of some..

my camera battery died in the middle of the tour that they gave my mother and i, so i missed out on some good pictures of the newest part of the Zoo that just opened in October.. i will be going back this coming weekend for more pics.

anyway.. i donated some reed's as i am looking to get out of the Tree frog hobby for a while, and condense my collection to just a few species...
My mother and i were treated to a "backstage tour " of the zoo.. and we got to feed some animals, and i got to go into the Gibbon's (monkeys) exhibit and visit with them.. that was SO cool!!

here are the pics:

(red panda ) this guy was so sweet..

i will only be keeping my Leucs' and Lamasi for the time being.. i may try tree frogs again in the future, but with my work schedule, i have enough to keep up with and dont have the time/resources for such prolific frogs.

The zoo will be placing my name and available frogs on a list Serve, which basically sends out feelers to other zoos that are looking to add to their amphibian collections.. so the Reed's that i have left may be leaving shortly to another zoo somewhere....

i will also be supplying the zoo with fruit fly cultures, spring tail cultures and lobster roach cultures..

i also plan to volunteer my weekends there at the zoo.. it will be basically grunt work ( cleaning enclosures, feeding and such ) but i think it will be a very valuable and awesome experience for me..

:)

My Pygmy's are doing well. i lost two over the holidays. my really old WC female and a juvie male hatchling. not too sure why the hatchling died, but the female was well into her old age..

thanks for looking!

My lamasi and Leucs are doing amazing. i had one more lamasi morph out, unfortunately with spindley leg... so that doesnt leave much hope for the other tads in the tank now.. but who knows..

here is a shot of my leuc tank as of today:

pretty much a mess of plants, but i am basically just using this tank to grow them out and will plant an empty 29 gallon tank soon for them.

I also redid my White sided bull snakes cage this weekend:

not a permanent tank, but i think that he likes being in here more then his sweater box.

I plan to cover the exposed egg crate with reptile carpet.. SOON!!

Time to update this page a bit more i believe.

i have been working a lot lately and have not had a chance to really catch up on any picture taking at all, until now that is.

I decided that i needed to rearrange a few frog tanks around this weekend, so i moved them all onto one corner of my room and away from beside my bed, etc.

here are some pictures of that:

I have my P. Lamasi tank to the far left, the juvie leuc tank in the middle and my last reed frog tank to the right. under the tanks are just storage space, etc.

i also picked up a new tank last weekend. a 15/20 gallon tall with stand and canopy for $20 !!!

unsure what i will do with this, but it was a great deal and too good to pass up.

:)
